Drive through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve to reach Caracol, the largest Maya archaeological site in Belize. At its peak around 650 AD, this city covered nearly 200 square kilometres and supported over 100,000 people. Climb Caana (“Sky Palace”)—at 143 feet, it remains the tallest man-made structure in Belize—for panoramic views over the jungle canopy to Guatemala. Your guide will walk you through five plazas, ball courts, and the site’s complex history of warfare and alliances with Tikal and Naranjo.
Round-trip transportation, entrance fees, a licensed guide, and a picnic lunch. A swim stop at Rio On Pools or Rio Frio Cave can also be added. This is a full-day tour.
Caracol is roughly a 2-hour drive from San Ignacio on partially unpaved roads. Wear sturdy shoes, and bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and plenty of water. There are restrooms and a small visitor centre on site but no shops—bring any snacks you’ll need. Moderate fitness required for climbing Caana.
